The focus of our ministry has been to reach the "river people" who live along the Amazon River. There are over 33,000 communities without access to the Gospel. Our strategy is to evangelize and disciple the youth from the urban centers of Brazil, train them to become pioneering missionaries in our three-year missionary training institute, and then help coordinate our graduates in conjunction with their home churches as they plant new churches in the river communities. We reach about 10,000 young people each year with our camps, public school outreach, Christian school, and Bible club ministries. We have 108 full-time students in our institute. We also train about 200 leaders in our weekend leadership training classes. We also are currently planting churches in about 100 different communities on the Amazon River through the boat ministry.
Gary and Sandy Parker have been serving in northern Brazil since 1991. We have three children who are serving in various locations: Mishaela as administrative assistant for The Children's Hunger Fund in Dallas, Texas, Joshua and wife Hilary as executive pastor at Central Church Augusta, Maine, and Mackenzie as an intern with Word of Life in Portugal. We serve as executive directors for Word of Life in northern Brazil. Our duties include leading our staff, overseeing the operations of the ministry, teaching in the Institute, disciple making, fundraising, representing the ministry and being a conference speaker.
